Really enjoyed your web site on the Sauna. There are 1 or 2 old Finnish saunas in Lanesville, Massachusetts, near Gloucester, MA. which a friend and I enjoyed a few years back. I understand the Finnish moved to this part of the U.S.A. because of the rock quarrying jobs. Looking forward to your book on Japanese baths. I lived in Japan for two years, and the hot baths are one of my fondest memories.

Fun to go through your sweat site! Coming from a Swedish family, I especially appreciated the rivalry and misperceptions between the Finns and Swedes. It reminded me of a joke I heard in Sweden with the German, Finn and American getting captured by headhunters and thrown in a boiling caldron, with the Finn responding a half an hour later: Do you have a towel? I also enjoyed a hamman in Istanbul, but the modesty was difficult to get used to. Then I discovered that the heat is different than a sauna by almost blacking out, getting carried outby two small men, who then tried to perform CPR on me and squirt lemon juice up my nose. FYI for those interested in Chicago, there's a couple of legit ethnic bath houses worth checking out--Division Street Baths (Russian) and Paradise Bath on W. Montrose (Korean). There's also a group in Oak Park called the Shem Center that does ritualized Native American sweat lodges twice a year. To answer the Germans question about Scandinavian modesty--I can speak for the Swedes, who are more private than modest. With a lot of land, they don't have a culture of public nudity like in Germany. Mixed saunas among friends are common, but segrated at public pools, etc. But if a hotel only has one suana it will be mixed. Anyway, it would be great to strengthen the "sweat" culture in the US, especially here in the prudish Midwest. In the meantime, if and when I travel, I'll follow your example to find the good local sweat! Good job on the site, I've saved parts of it to hard copy for my more "cautious" city guests. Here in northern Michigan (lower penninsula) we sauna often and I regularly have Wednesday and Sunday crowds converge to sweat and feast afterwards. It truly is the social event in winter especially and though my sauna is small (wood fired) it draws a crowd because of a rushing river just 30 feet away that does not ice over, no nieghbors at all, surrounded by state and protected lands. There are at least 5 other saunas (all wood fired) in my little social circle here in the north but none of them have access to flowing (or any) water, just buckets or snow and one that has a cast iron tub filled for each sauna. I find the flowing water to be an essential aspect of the sweat, either because of the cleansing of mind, body and soul or the euphoric rush that comes from the immersion. Once again an excellent site and good information. I too, would like to know if/when your book is reprinted. I have one picture of my sauna on my web page and it can be viewed at: www.deepwoodpress.com Thanks for the morning reading.... Chad

More than helpful was the information I found on this site about sweat (sauna and sweatlodge). In my coming art-project I have the idea to build a sauna myself and thanks to this information I will realize this project (called experience9) pretty soon. This piece exists out of three parts, beginning with `endurance`. In this piece I will stay in a sauna until it will become unbearable. I might start to hallucinate, I might faint, I don't know. While this is an experiment to the limits of the body I am just as uncertain to what will happen as you are. I will video this event with a security-camera to make it live showable in the living room (`cause the sauna I build in my back garden). The second piece is the piece I would like to call `communication`. In this piece I invite strangers to share the space with me. We might be both naked. And instead of offering the audience a `passive enjoyment` I will offer them a (inter)active participation, an experience. I bring people together as well. the third piece is called `reflection` in which I use the video-images to make a video-work. Probably with addition of sounds and different projectors. I am looking forward to realize this project and I am very interested in any reaction, so please feel free to e-mail me. For the rest I would like to say that I am very pleased with the warmth and quality of the photographs of Mikkel Aaland. I really love those pictures, thanks a lot for having those beautiful eyes! Cheers!

Photoshop for the Web. Great book - better than all the rest! I loved this book. I discovered an infinite number of new tricks using the Photoshop tools I already knew. Everything was spelled out clearly as the what the tip or procedure will accomplish, how to accomplish it in Photoshop with step-by-step instructions and why it works in the first place. Plus the book is well-organized so I can quickly find and re-find what I was after. There are many ways to accomplish the same end in Photoshop. This book shows some of the most clever and efficient ways to prepare graphics for the Web. Even the experts, such as the professional web designers surveyed from the book, could benefit from Photoshop for the Web. As both a bookseller and web consultant, I recommend this book over the rest.

I started taking sauna in the upper peninsula of Michigan when I was 1 month old.I have built smoke saunas, gas and wood. I had a roar reading about the modern complexities of building a room of the "right" size and all the fancy fru-fru.The finlanders who came the UP in the 1890's and 1900's brought their memories of home and built wonderful sauna's. I have been in saunas with handhewn dovetailed cornered logs and a hand built rock stove and chimney with birch benches worn smooth with years of sweaty buttocks. It was never a big deal, just something you did on Saturday night. In the restoration of Old Victoria near Rockland, MI is a sauna that was built for the use of the crew. During the 1900 to 20's there was a public sauna run for the use of the miners. It is fun to travel in the UP with my big city friends listen to them comment on the large "outhouses" on people's property. They could not tell  the difference by size of the prizy vs the outhouse.

Decent job! done on the history of the sauna. Learned some new things. Oh, when my brothers and I created the 300 club. We would heat the sauna up to 200 plus degrees and then go outside in the snow when the wind-chill got down to 100 below. It sure felt good...
